Evaluations Semester 1

Brief 01 My Design Process

This was my first design fully in English. At first I was a little bit lost because I didn't know how to approach the way of working. Hopefully my classmates explained me a lot about blogging and everything I wanted to know. This short brief allowed to me to see and start my Level 05 year. At the beginning, the brainstorm session helped me define my own design process, which I never thought about before. I can notice how it was important and how many ways it can be considered. The other thing I enjoyed to try is folding paper. I tested difficult ones but I failed many times and I found that the simplest would be the clearest. Thus I created a simple form but I had to find a thing that would make the originality of my leaflet. So I tried a pop-up list. With the crit session I get the idea to take different types of paper, like tracing paper in order to create an illusion with layers. After having printed and folded my leaflet, I was really happy of the result. I was comforted with this as I gat some good feedback from my classmates. If I had to change something in my work, I would follow more the flowchart I've done at the beginning because the questions I asked was more interesting than the final list I made. I liked to see the work of the others, there were some good ideas and above all I liked to discover the English way of work which is unlike the French one.

Brief 02 Logostarter

I encountered difficulties for starting this project. I used to know and visit Kickstarter website and I think it's a really interesting way to help and finance fresh start-ups. But this time, it was hard to find a project that I'm pleased with. Moreover, the task seemed to me a little bit trouble because we had to create and define a visual identity for our chosen project but most of the projects I liked had already a good communication. So I decided to turn towards architecture projects which needed the creation of an identity. I chose the Haven House one, because I found the idea truly innovative. I stopped my research and started to find concepts for the logo. Before that, I did some research about the project and I realized that's a pretty old one but it never really worked. Then I asked myself about the reasons of this non-success and maybe it's because the communication didn't work at the past and so now. The website, the logo, they are some proofs that there were things to improve. After having analysed this, I had to find the best communication supports and I thought about the website (it was obvious) and a business card. I guess I could have done a leaflet if time had permitted me. Finally, I really like the design I've made during this short term. To conclude, this brief allowed to me to identify all problems we can encounter by planning a delivery for a client. Most of the time, there are constraints that we have to follow.

Brief 03 A brief history of…

This project introduced me how to design a website which I've never done before. I was barely anxious because I used to make design for print and coding was a huge task to approach. Hopefully when I saw I was in the same case as everybody I felt relieved. However I needed to learn more about this field. With the different tasks I've done, I see how many settings I've to take account for the elaboration of a website of a website. That reinforced me to design my own website. Thinking about a process which is different from video websites like YouTube was not easy. The purpose to viewers a choice between a random function and a selection mode. I wanted a simple template because the video and text content is enough. One of my classmates told me it looked like the Vine website because of the green and grey colours I took for this. Perhaps I had have to use another colour… but I was feeling quite proud by the ones I chose. Finally, I tried to code my website. Unfortunately I missed the workshop about that and I looked for tutos on the Internet, that was a big deal and I had not enough time to do it correctly. I preferred instead to make a little animation to explain how it works. At the end, I'm happy for having done this project. This allowed me how a website works and all the skills it involves. This made me want to continue in this way and it showed me all creative possibilities I can use and develop.

Brief 04 Augmented Design

This advertising brief has caused me some challenges but I'm happy to have been confronted with. It was not easy to make something realisable as my content was not really precise. I had only my logo and visual identity from my website and unfortunately no images except those extracted from videos. I was feeling struggled with that but finally I've found a concept: make my campaign like a game. I think people loves mysterious things so I decided to make it with an interactive tone. For the poster, I wanted a small one so people could put their smartphone on the black part and take their time to discover the website. The flyer and the stickers were made for a direct link to the network (there they get a random video like the eye concept of the homepage). On one hand I'm little bit disappointed of myself because I would have liked to do more designs for poster and flyer based on the same principle. On the other hand the hardest task for me was to familiar with the problem of cost, distribution and time-frame. I did the bast I can do for communication strategy by thinking about and like the audience. Eventually I helped myself by searching on the Internet inspiration and tips for improving that. As a conclusion, I thought it was the most difficult project I dealt with during this semester. By the way I'm aware that I didn't take enough time to make the best of it and I can feel it in designs I've done. Therefore that proves me that advertising demands a lot of process for finding the perfect concept.

OUGD504 Brief 02 Logostarter - Development & Application

I decided to develop the idea of the round logo with the name of the organization in capitals. I wanted a fairly minimalist line drawings to remind the structure. The seemingly simple logo will help me to be able to modulate its application to the media and make an interactive logo.

☞ Business card

Triangles pattern : I wanted to create a contrast between the logo and geometric forms and let them communicate together.

I removed some % of opacity, then we can see shades inside the logo.

Colors : I chose clear ones because I wanted to create a soft atmosphere around the concept of the Haven House, a safety home.

OUGD504 Brief 02 Logostarter - Experimentation

☞ To imagine the logo of Haven House, I initially focused on the concept of the structure. As it is spherical, I think it is essential to remember that form in the drawing.

Research around the circle : / Recherches autour du cercle :

Some inspirations :

Then I imagined a work on the name Haven House : both words begin with the same letter and have the same number of letters. I decided to play with typography on Illustrator.

After realizing this monogram, I have drawn abstract forms : / Après avoir réalisé ce monogramme, j'en ai tiré des formes abstraites :

I found an interesting result, these forms could be used as graphic signs in supports.

☞ Crits :
- The monograms from the abstract lines proved astute, they may think of a skyline
- However, it would continue to seek ways to integrate the shape of the structure in the logo

OUGD504 Brief 02 Logostarter - Existant Analysis

☞ The Haven House project was launched in 2004 but few media have been developed around this cause. A website exists, however I could see there are many gaps. I analyzed and identified several areas for improvement.

General appearance of the site : when I arrived on the home page, I noticed first of all that the colors were not adequate and a bit repulsive, although they relate to the theme of ecology. I was sorry that the screen space is not fully occupied. The information is so undeveloped, especially the visuals I find it important to show. Finally, the text is difficult to address because the information isn't hierarchical (no titles, no layout).

Logo: it's non-existent, the only sign indicating that we are on the project site is the title in the upper left, The Haven House written with the default font Times. Moreover, the choice of color from the background seems doubtful.

Editing flaws : as previously said, the text is not formatted and displayed defects such as breaks unjustified lines, strange shifts like the one I illustrated. I also noticed some "bugs" on the page, there are links hidden by the main text.

Navigation : links between pages is hard because they are not clear. On each page, we have several choices of links that appear and disappear as we advance in the site navigation. The image above is a prime example, the list suggests returns, links to other pages, it's very confusing and I got lost pretty quickly.

☞ Despite the many flaws of this site, the positives are to include:
- It's very complete and full of information (issues, visual from project, explanation of the structure, many examples)
- Quicktime animations that allow immersion in Haven House

☞ Finally it's necessary for the project to create an identity and a specific line graph that can be applied in various print and multimedia supports. Thus, the project will be developed and communicate more effectively with prospective investors and the target audience.

OUGD504 Brief 02 Logostarter - Contextualisation

☞ To understand the project, I have to find motivations. I've identified three main directions for the case of Haven House.
1° New solutions for housing
With more and more people on Earth, architects are seeking new ways to share the living space and ensure that there is a place for each. The most futuristic projects projecting structures on the moon, others are more realistic and already applied. This is the case of Vincent Eschalier, a French architect who designed and develop rooftops of Paris by building lofts.

Video extracted from Le Before du Grand Journal on Canal+ (07/10/14) :

According to Vincent Eschalier, the purpose of the architect today is to imagine the city differently, especially in congested cities like Paris where it's hard to find space. He hopes the project will inspire other architects in the world.

☞ The Haven House shows another vision of architecture inventing more spacious structure to house a family and takes into account the vagaries of the weather - a major concern for designers and builders.

2° Innovative structures
Nowadays homes are built with durable materials for having an effective isolation. Many people now use straw to build their house. This material is effective to protect properties and avoids the rapid spread of fire.

It'is also an environmental issue, recycled plastic would considerably reduce the release and accumulation of waste in nature, like the 7th continent of plastic in the Pacific.

☞ The structure of the Haven House is composed of recycled materials such as plastic bottles and other materials such as bamboo and concrete. The purpose of this project is to reuse waste intelligently and reintegrate it in order to build houses.

3° Looking for new lifestyles
More and more people are turning to alternative lifestyles, rejecting the process of growth. They want to meet their own needs and avoid waste. They also want to get real products in a world where everything is altered. The most obvious example is the community of Auroville in India. It has been founded in 1968 and today is a self-suffisence model.

☞ The Haven House is equipped with technology that improves energy autonomy of the house. It will generate its own electricity through solar panels and recover rainwater for domestic use.

☞ Finally to whom is destined this project ?
Everyone will have the opportunity to afford a Haven House. However, the project founder believes that poor people will access to these houses when humanitarian crises happen in risk areas (Haiti, Sri Lanka ...) to rebuild their habitat and prevent further tragedies of natural causes.

OUGD504 Brief 02 Logostarter - Chosen Project "Haven House"

☞ I chose an architectural project called Haven House by Jerry Woodcock. The idea is to create buildings based on a spherical structure which is earthquakes, storms and fire resistant. Building materials such as bamboo or recycled plastic bottles are inexpensive, making the Haven House accessible to many people. Note that home is self-sufficient as it has facilities like solar power or rain collectors.

OUGD504 Brief 02 Logostarter

☞ The mission of this week proposes to choose a project from Kickstarter and create a logo for it. The aim is to take into consideration:
- To whom is this project for ?
- What communication strategy should be adopted ?
- In which context the logo is ?
The next step is to define the design and the media in which the logo will be put in situation.

☞ The seminar on branding that followed the brief raised several important points. The logo should actually embody the brand, it's designed to be seen and recognized by a large audience and it's also necessary to know the values that surround the company or collective.
